I was recently playing back video from a ZP-NE14-S system (on firmware version V40.0.3.02) using the latest ZViewer WIndows program (version 188.8.131.52) and this was working fine. I was using ZViewer remotely and was not on the same LAN as the system. Later, when I tried to play back video, ZViewer was showing that it could not find any video for any cameras. When selecting Storage Type = Device Video, it did not show any days in the calendar as having video for any camera.
The next day, I went on-site to where the system is installed and while viewing the VGA output of the NVR, live video was working fine, but it said that the hard drive was not formatted! And it also showed no past video available to view directly from the NVR. So I proceeded with the steps to have the NVR format the hard drive. The screen said it would take around 5 minutes, but it seemed to take only 1 or 2 minutes. After the NVR re-started, I could see that video was being recorded fine. But interestingly, I was able to find and playback past video from all the cameras in the past week. The only missing video was between around the time when I found I couldn’t playback video remotely in ZViewer and when the system was re-started after the hard drive was formatted.
By the way, the system has always been set with Overwrite mode in the NVR recording settings.
So questions on this:
How could the NVR think that the hard drive was not formatted and stop recording?
If the hard drive had really been formatted, then I would assume all past recorded video should have been lost. But this was not the case. In fact, immediately after the NVR was re-started (after formatting the hard drive), I could see the amount of used and free space on the hard drive that the NVR reported, and it was saying that something like 980 GB were used and 3 GB were free. It seems that formatting the hard drive from the NVR did not really format it, and just enabled recording to work again. Is there an explanation for this?
The hard drive in the ZP-NE14-S system is a 1TB Western Digital green desktop hard drive (SATA / 64MB Cache, WD10EZRX). It came with the system pre-installed when it was purchased new from Best Buy (direct from Best Buy and not a 3rd party seller). Could there be some issue with Western Digital green hard drives that can cause the NVR to all of a sudden think it was not formatted? I’ve seen other threads where Western Digital purple hard drives are recommended, but since I assume this system came direct from the Zmodo factory, this Western Digital green hard drive is supposed to work ok for this system.
